Have you recently moved into a new home and are ready to start hanging up your artwork? If so, you will want to know the following tips for how to hang all that artwork up the correct way.
Match The Artwork Shape To The Wall
Selecting the artwork that goes on a wall should start by matching the artwork to the shape of the wall. This will allow the artwork to feel like it is a natural part of the wall, rather than being hung there because it is the only artwork you happened to have on hand.
For example, if you have artwork that is a square shape, it will fit best on a wall that is square. It creates negative space around the artwork that helps frame it. If you have a tall and narrow section of wall between two windows, then you'll want your tall and narrow artwork to go there.
You also need to consider the furniture that is against the wall and the space that it leaves behind for artwork. If you have that same square wall with a couch against the bottom, it turns the space above it into a rectangle rather than a square. This will make the space more ideal for landscape-orientated artwork that fills in the space
Hang Artwork At The Correct Height
Now that you've selected the wall and the artwork that you will be placing on it, you want to make sure that the artwork is placed at the correct height. A problem that is far too common is that artwork is placed too high in a room, which makes it seem odd.
The key is to make sure that the center of the artwork's vertical length is at the average person's eye line. If you are hanging artwork in a child's bedroom, it may make sense to lower the artwork so that it is at their level. If you are placing artwork in a living room, it will be better to place the artwork on the wall based on an adult's average height.
A similar rule applies if you are hanging a collage of photos. The only difference is that you look at the collage as a whole and find the vertical center of it. Some artwork may be higher or lower than others, but on average they are all still going to be at your eye line.
